Switch Pen
We developed a pen with a smooth and addictive magnetic clicking mechanism to enhance the writing experience.
Challenge
When SLIMDESIGN was tasked to design a new pen, we set the challenge of reinventing the traditional pen mechanism.
Approach
We wanted the mechanism to be satisfying, playful, and semi-addictive. We began sketching slides, switches, and various other ideas to open the pen. From there, we 3D printed the most promising concepts and made small adjustments to optimize the mechanism.
Result
In addition to the new satisfying mechanism, we invented a new pen grip that gives the user the option to choose if they want to use the pen grip. The classic hexagonal design gives the pen a timeless experience.
We placed the switch on the side of the pen and the grip on only three sides of the hexagonal body, giving the user an option to use the grip or not.

The mechanism uses magnets to achieve a satisfying “snap” when opening/closing the pen.
